I really would of liked to spend more then a few minutes in the early monochrome and 8 bit color worlds of the game but you’ve opened a chest and “evolved” the world before you can even take in the aesthetic. What I mean by this is that some of the eras that Evoland explores go by so fast they’re barely worth exploring. This though is kinda where the game drops the ball. The point of the game is just going through these eras in RPG gaming and experiencing the evolution of the genre. But that’s kind of okay because that’s not the point of Evoland. This lack of game world also means a very limited selection of weapons, magic and enemies to battle. The game world itself is also extremely limited with only a few areas and terrains as well as a whopping two towns. Rating this game is going to be hard and it may end up getting a much lower score then maybe it deserves because it really has no plot outside of the most bare bones and stereotypical evil being is draining the worlds life and being evil. It’s very obvious that the game takes strong influence from Zelda, Final Fantasy and Diablo. Its all very generic but it’s sort of meant to be. You also “unlock” elements along the way such as other party characters and things like “stoyline” a minimap. EVOLAND FINAL BOSS SERIESSimple visual style is not the only way the game evolves throughout but also in the realm of gameplay as you switch between action RPG style gameplay akin to the Zelda series and then to Final Fantasy type turn based battles and eventually even a Diablo type system. That premise is that Evoland “evolves” as you play in both graphical and gameplay styles going through the evolution of RPG games throughout the genres history.įor instance the game starts out in a monochrome very “Gameboy” style environment and as the game progresses you open chests that add elements to the world going from monochrome 8-bit to 16-bit color and eventually to Playstation I/II type graphics with various stops in between like mode 7 during your 16-bit style era. Evoland is one of those indie games on steam that I kind of enjoyed but I feel it was just to short to really exploit the one really awesome premise the game brought forth. I suppose it’s not always a bad thing if someone wants your game to be longer but I just feel that 5 to 6 hours for an RPG is just to damn short. Of course this is to be expected since many indie RPG’s are the work of only one person or a small group and can’t devote the time or resources to creating a 40 hour RPG but still…. It’s mostly due to that they almost feel like padding to my list since many of them are just so damn short. I sometimes have mixed feelings about beating some indie RPG’s and adding them to my completed list.
